Interviews, Interviews, Interviews...

 So.

As we all know, filming is coming up, and the B-roll is not everything. Without interviews, a documentary is not a documentary, it's just a compilation of shots - which is why Kim and I have been going crazy trying to write these questions and set up filming days.

A while back, I was added to a group chat with some people from AICE Media that needed help filming or were going to be participating in other people's projects. As we each figured out what was going on with our projects, we began sending our ideal shooting dates and asking who could be available to offer some of their assistance. This was a huge help in terms of getting scheduling done, especially since two of the people in that chat were actually our interviewees. Leading up to the project, I had mentioned that I would prefer filming earlier in the week, that way I could start editing as soon as possible.

While all of this was happening, Kim also made a group chat with everyone participating in the doc, including the two of us and the interviewees. I also made another chat (I know, so many chats) containing the "crew" for the documentary, since I knew going in that Kim and I will most likely be needing some help during filming (we ended up asking Wade, another AICE Media student and CBTV member I trust a lot, and Sammy, another CBTV member that we were actually considering as an interviewee).

Over time, we were able to come up with this schedule:

    - Monday: Sabrina (interview and B-roll shoot)

    - Tuesday: Maya (interview and B-roll shoot)

    - Wednesday: Tess (interview and B-roll shoot)

NOTE: 10:00-11:00 AM for interview, and then 11:00 - 3:00 PM for B-roll

Everyone seems to be okay with this (especially since Maya will be shooting her music video in the later half of break), so we settled with this schedule. We hope that there are no scheduling issues and that everything goes smoothly (though I have a small hunch that there will be some tweaks, especially since filming always takes longer than expected). Hopefully with an entire week off of school, we'll be able to make things work.

In addition to forming the chats to facilitate communication, we decided to tell the interviewees that we would send the questions out by Saturday (today) in order to not just stay on track and finish questions as early as possible (we have filming to worry about), but also to allow them to absorb and look over the questions before they got to the interview. In order to write more accurate questions, we asked them to write a short "bio" for themselves or topics they would like to discuss. This allowed us to not just get an idea of what they believed about the male gaze, but it also helped us write more direct questions. These are the short paragraphs they wrote (Kim was sending them to me as she received them so they are a little jumbled):

SABRINA

MAYA

TESS

Man, I'm both excited and terrified for these interviews, they're going to be quite... heavy. But they are definitely conversations that need to be had, hence why we are making the documentary!

Although, with all of this new info, Kim and I were able to write the remainder of the questions (and tweak some of the previous ones I posted earlier) in order to send them out by the time we promised. We used the structure to stay focused as well. These were the final questions (keep in mind we are planning to ask more questions on the spot and possibly not ask some if the interview is going in a certain direction):

Now with the majority of the pure-writing done, it's time for me to focus on getting the filming space ready and making sure that everything is functional. I'm starting to get nervous knowing that filming starts REALLY soon (it begins Monday, and it is currently Saturday, so about two days). Hopefully it all goes well and that we are able to solve problems on the spot if anything were to arise! Despite all of these natural nerves, though, I'm feeling pretty good. I'll write some more tomorrow as I get the space ready and set everything up for the real thing!
