Hidden Gems in the TV Production Studio

Great News!

A couple of days ago, I had mentioned that my TV program has an inventory room with a bunch of old equipment that we no longer use. On Monday, Kim went in and sent me some pictures (I was not at school). Here is what she found:

From what can be seen in the photos, it is a collection of old cameras, TVs, camcorders, and computer monitors. Basically, what we need! Kim was not able to test anything on Monday, but I stayed after school today to take a look for myself. I was not surprised when the majority of this stuff did not work (that is why it has remained as "inventory," which the club cannot use or throw away due to some weird rule that is currently in place. I did not expect much of this to work in the first place, so this was not a surprise. I will admit, though, I have a lot of masking and editing to do...

There were some TVs that did work, though. The only downsides are that 1. the screens were so dim that I don't think it would be worth it to have them on, anyways, and 2. turning all of them on and connecting them to some other source would require Kim and I to buy a bunch of cables that we simply cannot afford (also, it just would not be practical at all). Because of all this, I think it is best if we just pretended as if nothing worked, that way the editing process is done in a uniform way.

However, one piece of equipment in particular did work - and it was not something I expected us to have in the studio. A HUGE, FUNCTIONAL CRT TV! I know that for some older folks this is not as exciting since this was the norm about twenty years ago, but considering I have been looking for some online for the past two weeks, this was definitely an exciting find.

So again, this is basically what I have been looking for this whole time, especially on Facebook Marketplace (since Craigslist and other sites like LetGo were not working out). Sadly, people are not as responsive on Facebook Marketplace, either. Shocker! I guess that one has to work extra hard for things if they want to get them for cheap.

There is one challenge when it comes to this TV, though: it's size. I think that it's both an advantage and disadvantage since it would be interesting to have a really big prop to use as the center piece, however getting it out of the TV studio is going to be quite the task. Not only is it VERY heavy, but I'm somehow going to have to sneak it out of the side doors. I'm checking out the equipment for break and my TV advisor already agreed to everything, I just want to make sure I avoid any issues with administration. That would not be fun! (I swear I am not doing anything illegal I am simply.... being a little "low-key," that is all.

In addition to the stuff in the pictures, my advisor offered to lend us some of the cables we need to connect the TV to a camera and have a live feed as we record (I will properly explain this in a later blog post). There are also very old cameras and some newer camcorders that I could also use for that; so technically, we have enough props for filming. I just need to see what exactly we'll be checking out, how we are going to set it up, transport it, etc. It's going to take quite a bit of planning but honestly, I am excited to get this going. I'm thinking of taking everything home on Wednesday next week, that way I have plenty of time to play around with everything before we film. I will be updating you guys as I start taking things home, so stay tuned! Thanks for reading.
